Olympian Dana Vollmer Highlights 2016 Pacific Masters Annual Meeting and Celebration

Warm skies greeted the 250 plus participants at this year’s Pacific Masters Annual Meeting and Celebration. For some, the day began with a swim workout at the San Mateo Athletic Club pool on the grounds of the College of San Mateo.  This year’s Tech Talk was held in conjunction with the USMS National Coaches Clinic and featured Dr. Rod Havriluk, the president of Swimming Technology Research. An internationally renowned expert on biomechanics as applied to aquatic sports, Dr. Havriluk’s talk was titled Swimming Science: Technique Misconceptions. At times controversial, the talked challenged many assumptions regarding optimal swimming technique.

The highlight of the day was the keynote talk by Dana Vollmer. Ms. Vollmer is a three time Olympian, winner of multiple gold medals and world record setter. Dana told of her swimming journey from being the youngest ever participant at the US Olympic Swimming trials to the first American mother to win an Olympic swimming gold medal. She recounted the health and motivational challenges she faced along the way.  Joining Dana was her husband, former Stanford swimming star Andy Grant, and son, Arlen, born just 18 months before the 2016 Games!

Following Dana’s talk, Pacific Masters Chair and President John King reviewed the organization’s 2016 activities. Vice Presidents John Morales (Pool Meets), Phyllis Quinn (Open Water), Laura Schuster (Clubs and Coaches) and Bob Anderson (Communications and Technology) provided updates on their committee’s operations. Treasurer Teddy Palmer reviewed our financial results and proposed the  2017 budget which was unanimously approved. John also introduced the other members of the Pacific Masters Board Directors: Leianne Crittenden (Secretary), Peter Guadagni (past Chair) and Charlene O’Brien (Office Administrator, ex-officio Board member).

The meeting ended with the presentation of the Pacific Masters Service and Achievement Awards. A list of the award winners can be found here.
