Open Water Points

The number of points that a swimmer can earn depends upon the number of open water events that have points associated with them.
The number of swims that have open water points associated with them can change during the season, if swims are added and/or deleted.
To determine the number of swims that count towards open water swims, divide in half the number of open water swims that earn points. If the number is uneven, the higher number will be used for calculations. For example, if there are 15 open water swims that earn points, a swimmer’s highest place in 8 of the swims will be calculated.
If there are more than 21 events that earn points, only a swimmer’s top 10 scores will be compiled for open water points.
There are 2 open water points divisions; one for swimmers wearing Category 1 suits; the other for swimmers wearing Category 2 suits. A swimmer can only be declared overall winner in one division.
If a swimmer has earned points wearing Category 1 or Category 2 suits, their open water points will be calculated. Then, the category in which they place the highest will be used to determine their Category in the open water points competition. If a swimmer has placed the same wearing both Category 1 and Category 2 suits, the category where they earned the highest number of open water points will determine their Category for open water points.

Open Water Points Competition
A. Event Description
1. Every year the Open Water Points Competition shall recognize a champion in each age division for swimmers competing in individual PacMasters open water events for both Category 1 and Category 2 suits. (See description of what a Category 1 is and Category 2 suit.)
2. All individual sanctioned open water events will count towards the competition, except 500 yard swims.
3. The intent of the competition is to recognize participation and achievement in designated open water events by awarding points for finish placement.
4. Points shall be scored according to a swimmer's gender and age group finish placement in each race.
5. An individual is automatically entered in the competition when he/she places in the top ten at one of the designated events.
6. 500 yard/meter swims do not earn open water points.
7. If an open water swim has more than 2 events (e.g. a ½ mile swim, a 1 mile swim, a 2 mile swim) only 2 of the events count towards open water points.
The 2 events that are counted are the 2 where they swimmer placed the highest. (e.g. If a swimmer came in first in the ½ mile, 4th in the 1 mile and 9th in the 2 mile, the ½ mile and 1 mile swim would count towards points.)
8. Swimmers can earn open water points if they are wearing either Category 1 or Category 2 suits. However, swimmers can only be declared an end of season winner in one category.
9. If a swimmer has earned points wearing Category 1 or Category 2 suits, their open water points will be calculated. The category in which they place the highest will be used to determine their Category in the open water points competition.
10. If a swimmer has placed the same wearing both Category 1 and Category 2 suits, the category where they earned the highest number of open water points will determine their category.
11. If a swimmer has placed the same wearing both Category 1 and Category 2 suits and has the same number of points then the number of first place, second place, third place, etc. will be calculated. The category with the highest number will determine their Category in the open water points competition.
B. Rules
1. Only PacMasters registered swimmers may participate.
a. If non-PacMasters swimmers are in the results, they will be astericked “*” and deleted from overall points competition. PacMasters swimmers will be moved up in the scoring for overall points.
2. The Open Water Points Tabulator will announce the scoring scheme before the beginning of the season. This will be published on the PacMasters webiste
3. If a swimmer changes age groups between the first and last swims of the season competition, their points will be transferred into the age group in which they compete in their final race of the season.
4. Final results showing the top 6 in each age group shall be published after the last PacMasters open water swim of the season and awards presented to 1st through 3rd place in each age group. The swimmer in each division (men and women) who scores the most points for the year shall be declared champion.
C. Awards

Awards shall be distributed to the award winners by hand delivery to a club representative, by hand delivery to the award winner, or by mail.
