NEW SWIMMING RULES
FINA, the international body that governs swimming at its meeting in
July issued some new technical rules of swimming. There are two
changes that are of concern to Masters swimmers.

The major change will be in the butterfly. FINA has said that
effective September 20th, there will be no breaststroke kick in the
butterfly. USMS Masters will be deciding in how to implement this
rule - USMS has complete control on the SCY rules, but not the meters
rules. There is a chance that the FINA's Masters Congress will change
the rule for Masters, but they will not be meeting till next year.
The bottom line is that if you have a chance to set a world record in
the butterfly, you should be using the dolphin kick after September
20th.

FINA also dictated that in the backstroke finish, "The body may be
submerged at the finish touch." This will allow the dive for the
finish at the end of the heat.

FROM THE DESK OF COACH MIDNIGHT

The Heart of the Matter --- revisited.

Some recent research on estimating one's maximum heartrate seem to be
a bit more accurate in estimating max H.R. by using a revised
formula. In my article last week I had mentioned that the 'old
standard' formula (220 minus your 'age' = your maximum H.R.) tended
to be somewhat inaccurate.

A lot of exercise physiologists had noticed that the results they
were getting in the lab indicated that the 'formula' (220-age) was
UNDERESTIMATING the true maximal H.R. for their subjects. That is,
most subjects were recording higher maximal heart rates (max HR) than
the formula estimated.

So they did some research to 'find' a better formula. What they
found in addition to a better formula was that maximal heart rate is
directly influenced by age, and is independent of gender and fitness
level. They also found that the 'OLD FORMULA' overestimates maximal
heart rate in young adults, was accurate for those individuals around
age 40, and increasingly underestimated maximal heart rate in older
adults as the age increased.

So what is the 'NEW FORMULA' ?? It is: 208 minus ('age' x 0.7)
--

Here are some examples:

20 year old
	   "OLD" FORMULA: 220 - age = 200 BPM max.
	   "NEW" FORMULA: 208 - (age x 0.7) = 194 BPM max.
40 year old
	   "OLD" FORMULA: 220 - age = 180 BPM max.
	   "NEW" FORMULA: 208 - (age x 0.7) = 180 BPM max.
60 year old
	    "OLD" FORMULA: 220 - age = 160 BPM max.
	    "NEW" FORMULA: 208 - (age x 0.7) = 166 BPM max
80 year old
	   "OLD" FORMULA: 220 - age = 140 BPM max
	   "NEW" FORMULA: 208 - (age x 0.7) = 152 BPM max

These findings were published in the "Journal of the American College
of Cardiology". As always, each individual has their own maximal
heart rate -- but at least this new formula does a better job at
estimating the maximal heart rate for most Masters Swimmers. "Do the
Math" and see how it works for you.
