Pacing................

"Swimmers who know 'Pacing' are the luckiest swimmers in the
World..........."

With apologies to "Barbra" --- but it is true; without the ability
to know your pace, to correctly pace a set or race, to predict your
performance by monitoring your pace -- a swimmer will never reach
their fullest potential.

And the best way to learn 'PACE' (and every swimmer can do this --
not just the 'gifted" ones) by paying attention to the pace clock
each and every repeat.

Learn to 'read' the clock so you know when your next repeat is to
start -- and what your 'time' was on the previous swim. When you
have gotten that down -- start playing the game 'predict your time as
you are swimming a repeat'

And to be able to do that you have to swim in an energy efficient
manner -- that is,even-paced -- because if you always go out too fast
or go out too slow -- it is very difficult to 'plot the curve' so to
speak and project into the future and predict your time.

Being able to correctly pace a set will allow your body to get the
fullest adaptations from that set. If you tend to work way too hard
early on in a aerobic set -- and start to tie up just as the coach
asks you to to start descending your times -- you will miss out on
valuable training in the energy systems needed for maximizing your
aerobic potential.

What you will have done is an incomplete and poorly done "anaerobic"
training session as well as an incomplete and poorly done "aerobic"
training session. That is --the worst of both worlds.

So, learn to properly pace yourself and see the results !!!

The Loomis Basin Dolphin recreational swim team is looking for a head

ANY CLUB WITH INDEPENDANT BY-LAWS?
If any club operates as an independent rather than a city sponsored group,
and has by-laws that work for them, Tri Valley Masters would like to talk to
them. CONTACT Joanne Bervan jdnevreb at earthlink.net

RULE BOOK ON LINE
Because the convention was so late (due to 9/11), so is the 2002 Rule
Book. The good news is that Meg Smath (Publications Chair) and Jim
Matysek (USMS Webmaster) have done a terrific job of updating it and
getting it onto The USMS web site so that those of you who are
running a meet in the near future, now have access to the Rule Book
and can download or print out the technical rules. It can be found at

All competitive swimmers should be familiar with the technical rules
of the strokes - it is only four pages long
	http://www.usms.org/rules/part1.pdf

Have a good week.
