10,000 PACIFIC MASTERS SWIMMERS
On Friday, October 11th, 2002, Pacific Masters reached a milestone by
registering it 10,000th member for the year. Michele Heinz of the
Santa Clara Swim Club was the 10,000 registered member this year. Her
2003 membership fee will be picked by Pacific Masters

Pacific Masters, the largest regional organization of United States
Masters Swimming, became the first LMSC to hit the five digit number.
Last year Pac Masters was within striking distance of the magic
number at year end and finished with 9700 registered swimmers.

Pacific has enjoyed ten years of sustained growth, increasing the
membership by about 500 swimmers a year.

"This is really a tribute to the coaches, meet directors and all the
volunteers who have worked tirelessly for the athletes" said Chairman
Michael Moore. "With the continued support of these volunteers and
the emphasis now being placed on physical fitness, I am sure we will
continue to lead USMS in membership.

GEORGE CUNNINGHAM SUFFERS A SMALL STROKE
George Cunningham had a stroke a week ago today. Georoge has been a
stalwart of Pacific Masters. He has swum for Tamalpias and now swims
for Cruz. George is seen at the Cruz meets. He also believes that it
is the breaststroke that is the most perfect of the competitive
strokes.

It wasn't a real bad one but a stroke never the less. His left side
is weakened and he did have some trouble swallowing but that is ok
now. His speech is a bit slurred though not too bad.

If you would like to send George a get well card, send it to

SWIMMERS CONQUER MONTEREY BAY
On Sunday, October 6, a team of six Pacific Masters swimmers
completed a relay crossing of the Monterey Bay, from Santa Cruz Main
Beach to the breakwater beach just south of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The team completed the 23 mile swim in 10:48.55. Relatively mild
conditions favored the swimmers throughout most of the swim. Clear
skies allowed a 5:20 a.m. start. and calm water prevailed throughout
the morning effort.

Afternoon winds generated 6-8 foot swells with some chop on the
56-58 degree water. The team followed the guidelines of the Channel
Swimming Association, each swimmer completing one hour legs from
start to finish. The team agreed that, even under these ideal
conditions, this is a very
challenging swim.

Team members were Becky Fenson, Duke Dahlin, Alex Johnston, Rick
Barthels, Neala Kendall, and Joel Wilson.
