RESULTS
The results of the Lake Berryessa Open Water Swim and the Walnut
Creek Long Course Invitational have been posted.
http://www.pacificmasters.org/comp/results.shtml
Congratulations to Tod Speiker, Suzanne Heim-Bowen and Rich Burns who
all broke World Records at the Walnut Creek Meet. Aldo daRosa broke a
national record.
There was a delay in posting the Lake Berryessa Results on the PMS
web site. This delay was caused by the discovery that an unentered
swimmer had participated under the name of an entered swimmer who did
not swim. This discovery has led to an on-going investigation and
correction of the results for this race. This behavior on the part
of any swimmer is unacceptable; it is also the sole cause for the
delay.
The PMS Executive Committee does not tolerate deceitful and
unsportsmanlike conduct and intends to take disciplinary action upon
any individuals found to knowingly engage in such acts.

DO YOU KNOW THE RULES?
BREASTSTROKE SITUATIONS (answer at bottom)
Bill Rose of USA Swimming wrote up the following situations for
officials. You might want to take a look at the questions and the
answers. (more questions next week).
1. At the local B+ meet, the Head Referee told the coach from a
neighboring town that the swimmer from his team was disqualified because his
body was past vertical toward the breast when the first arm stroke began.
Is this a correct explanation of the rule for this stroke?
2. Molly Peterson does her breaststroke so that her hands are completely
under the water when the hands are pushed forward together from the breast.
When she was an age group swimmer she was told that she could not recover
with her hands and arms out of the water. Is this a correct interpretation
of the rules for the breaststroke?
3. Now that Molly Peterson knows the proper technique for the
breaststroke, what can not come out of the water if the hands recover over
the water?
4. We see many younger swimmers complete the stroke part of their
breaststroke cycle by pulling to their hipline on every cycle. They use
this technique in order to obtain more distance in each stroke. Is this
legal?
5. Caitlin Smith swims the breaststroke while not taking many breaths.
She likes to keep her head under the water, except for the tip of her swim
cap. She was disqualified at a recent meet for not taking breaths during
each cycle. What is wrong with this officials interpretation of the rules?
6. After a deep forward start, Dave Mason took one arm stroke completely
back to his legs and then did a little butterfly kick to get closer to the
surface of the water. He was disqualified? What is the rule that states
the reason Dave was disqualified?
1, No, 101.1.2 states, "From the beginning of the first armstroke after the
start and after each turn, the body shall be kept on the breast."
2. No, 101.1.2 states, "... The hands shall be pushed forward together from the
breast, on, under, or over the water."
3. The elbows can not come out of the water. 101.1.2 states, "...The elbows
shall be under the water except for the final stroke before the turn, during
the turn and the last stroke at the finish of the prescribed distance."
4 No, 101.1.2 states, "... The hands shall not be brought beyond the hipline,
except during the first stroke after the start and each turn."
5 101.1.2 states, "...Some part of the swimmer's head shall break the surface
of the water at least once during each complete cycle of one arm stroke and
one leg kick, in that order, except after the start and each turn the
swimmer may take one arm stroke completely back to the legs and one leg kick
while wholly submerged."
6. This rule is found in 101.1.3. ..."A scissors, flutter, or downward
butterfly kick is not permitted"
