[PacMasterUpdate] The Update 27 January 2008

Update on Pacific Masters Swimming sent to members and friends. Mon Jan 28 00:39:25 EST 2008

Relay Meet Cancelled
February 3
Pacifica Rec Department reported that an electrical fire occurred
late Friday afternoon at the Oceana Pool. Water from the severe
storms had leaked through the roof and into the electrical system
causing significant damage. The Pool will be closed for "at least a
week" and the Marlins were told it is "very unlikely" that it will be
available for us to hold the Relay Meet next Sunday February 3rd.

Since there is no comparable facility available on short notice, and
getting the word out to teams about a location change on such short
notice would be difficult, the San Mateo Marlins are cancelling the
Meet.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The 2008 USF Valentines Day affair will be on 9 February 2008 at the

SHANE GOULD
1972 Australian Olympian Shane Gould spoke on the upcoming XII FINA
World Masters Championships and a wholistic way of looking at
swimming at the Sports Basement in the Presidio. Shane has been
working with her husband Milt Nelms on swimming technique and how to
swim faster. She presented some of their finding at the talk.

We would like to thank Amy Meyer and the Sports Basement for making
their community center available for Shane's presentation.

Jon Steiner Memorial Mile
You can start competing in the Jon Steiner Memorial Mile now.
Competition started on 22 December and will go through 29 February.
You can swim the Memoral Mile will swimming the One Hour Swim
(killing two birds with one stone).

ONE HOUR SWIM
The most popular even t sponsored by USMS is the One Hours Postal
Championships. Anyone can participate in their own pool by swimming
as far as he can in one hour while a friend or team mate logs the
yardage and splits. Information can be found in the current issue of
http://www.usms.org/longdist/ldnats08/1hrentry.pdf
You have to swim it by 11:59 Thursday, 31 January 2008.

GO THE DISTANCE
It looks like USMS will again have the GO THE DISTANCE Challenge. I
would urge swimmers to track their swimms for the a while until the
2008 forms are posted on the USMS Web site. To participate just log
your workout yardage.

http://www.usms.org/fitness/content/gothedistance
There is a wager between a close family member and me about who will
swim the most yards over the year. She has given me a handicap (which
is really my sad stroke). We will see who will swim the most, but you
may wish to compete against a lane mate or family member.

RESULTS
Results for The Olympic Club Mile and the Fog City Quatdrathon have
been posted on the Pacific Masters web site.

Thanks to Scott Williams, Laureen Welting and the Olympic Club for
running the TOC 1500. The Olympic Club has a fast pool and great
facilities.

And thanks to Diane Davis, Laura Goodwin and the Fog City Masters for
hosting the Fog City Quadrathon.
