PACIFIC MASTERS MISSION STATEMENT:

Pacific Masters Swimming welcomes anyone who would like to gain and
maintain fitness through swimming and encourages programs to foster
this mission.

Womens Free Relay 72-99

2008 COACH OF THE YEAR
The criteria we examine when selecting a Coach of the Year include
the technical excellence of the nominees; the level of achievement of
their swimmers, whether it be setting records and winning national
titles, or swimming in a very first meet; the coaches' service to
the Community, both in Masters Swimming and in their local
communities--do they publish, host events, support their swimmers on
the road? Do they create a welcoming environment for swimmers from
other teams when the drop in? Are their teams focused, spirited and
cheerful? How well do they address the special needs of their
swimmers? Are they creative and passionate?

The seven nominees for 2008 have these qualities in abundance--so
much so that we tend to take them for granted in all Pacific Masters
coaches. But it is the prevalence of these high standards in our
local coaches that makes Pacific Masters what it is today--the
largest and top to bottom most talented LMSC in the country. It's
not the weather. It's not the economy. It's the coaches that keep
Pacific Masters on top.
This wasn't an easy choice, as a strong case could be made for every
one of the nominated candidates. And this year, we had a bunch of
them.

The coaches nominated are
Steve Linz of Sierra Nevada Masters,
Rob Torgerson of Foutaingrove Athletic Club,
Dick Jacobberger of Oakwood Masters,
Christine Lockhart of Chico Masters,
Mike Lynch of Peninsula Covenant Masters,
Blythe Lucero of Berkeley Aquatic Masters and
Laureen Welting of The Olympic Club.

Also nominated, but set aside for this award are three
previous winners--Kerry O'Brien of Walnut Creek Masters, Brian Stack
of Manatee Aquatic Masters, and Valeriy Boryeko of USF Masters.

In our case, 2008 Pacific Masters Coach of the Year is that
of Laureen Welting. She has been coaching at the Olypic Club for
eight years. She works with swimmers all ability levels, from the
seniors. She coaches elite masters swimmers, membership at large,
young swimmers and old swimmers. She has been a coach on deck at
Nationals working to help swimmers who did not come with a coach.
Congratulation Laureen!!!

We would hope that those who took the time to write letters
in support of their coach would give their coach a copy of those
letter. It is the support of the swimmers that encourage the coach to
dig harder and work harder for their swimmers. Thanks to all who
wrote in support of their coach.

SWIM ACROSS AMERICA
For the last few years Swim Across America has had a San Francisco
Bay swim to raise money for breakthrough cancer programs at UCSF
Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital Oakland. Swim Across
America's motto is "Making Waves to Fight Cancer". This year the Bay
Swim will be on October 18th and you can find information on the swim
at
http://www.swimacrossamerica.org/NETCOMMUNITY/Page.aspx?pid=317&srcid=211.
We have changed the swim to accommodate more people.

In addition to the Bay swim we have a new pool event which runs for
the entire month of September. We are asking that masters teams swim
a total of 3000 miles, the distance from coast to coast. Each
individual participant is asked to raise a minimum of $50. (There are
incentives for individuals and teams that raise more than that.) This
is the first time that we are having this event and the SF Bay Area
is the first to try it. Please consider it for your team. Here is the
link:
http://www.swimacrossamerica.org/NETCOMMUNITY/Page.aspx?pid=561&srcid=211 .

MEET RESULTS DATA BASE
USMS Has a new meet results data base, where swimmers can go on line
to see how they have done in individual events. The database covers
about four years worth of data and does not have all Pacific Masters
swims in it, but it does have many of them. Go see how you have been
doing:
