GO THE DISTANCE
US Masters Swimming continues its fitness program of tracking your
swimming millage in the "Go The Distance" program. The program is just
to track your daily yardage on an Excel spreadsheet. Once a month send
the total to the Go the Distance chief - Mary Sweat.

There are two forms that one can use. The first is the easy form of
just tracking yardage, for those who realy want to track how that
yardage was achieved - swimming, kicking, by stroke there is the
advanced version of the swim sheet. (I am lucky I can just remember
what the total yardage was for the day - let alone break it out).

Linda Schoenberger wrote about the program in her "Come Join in the
Fun" article on the US Masters Swimming web site (http://www.usms.org/fitness/articleofthemonth.php?a=170
).

I encourage all swimmers to track their yardage over the year and to
have fun. (bet with your lane mates who will swim the most miles -
loser buys dinner). It would help of Coaches posted the total yardage
for the workout at the bottom of any workout board that they use.

Right now Walnut Creek swimmers are just barely leading Manatee
Masters by less than a mile. I hope all swimmers will participate.

REGIONAL CLUB CATAGORIES
The USMS House of Delegates passed a new rule regarding club scoring
at Nationals to take effect beginning with Short Course Nationals in
Clovis.

Previously, club awards at Nationals simply went to the top ten
highest scoring clubs in Men’s, Women’s and Combined categories. The
new rule establishes two separate club categories: Regional and Local.
A formal definition of the two club categories as well as the list of
regional clubs is at:

SUZANNE HEIM-BOWEN GOES BACK TO SCHOOL AND JOINS THE SWIM TEAM
From the US Masters Swimming web site "A Masters Swimmer's Return to
College Swimming

"In 1977 Suzanne Heim-Bowen was a founding member of the women's
swimming team at California Polytechnic State University, San Obispo,
Cal. (Cal Poly), but only competed for two seasons during her college
career. With remaining eligibility, Suzanne enrolled in classes and
joined the swim team at Diablo Valley College, a two-year community
college, in early 2009 at the age of 50. Suzanne maintains her full-
time job as a school psychologist, attends a full schedule of college
courses, and manages to swim with not one, but three, teams in her
local area!"

US MASTERS SWIMMING'S HEADQUARTERS TO SARASOTA, FLORIDA
U.S. Masters Swimming, is pleased to announce it has selected
Sarasota, Fla., in which to establish its national headquarters. After
an extensive search process that included the review of numerous
proposals from various cities across the country, the U.S. Masters
Swimming Board of Directors approved the selection of Sarasota.

"This is a significant milestone in the history of U.S. Masters
Swimming," commented Rob Copeland, U.S. Masters Swimming president.
"For nearly 40 years, we have existed as a virtual, volunteer-run
organization. Our membership has continued and is continuing to grow.
We are now at nearly 50,000 members, and with the hiring of an
executive director and additional staff, establishing a national
headquarters is a natural evolution."

"Sarasota, through the entire process, exhibited a tremendous
volunteer spirit that marries well with our culture," continued
Copeland. "They are committed to health and fitness, and aquatics are
an important part of their community, as evidenced by the nationally
recognized Sarasota Sharks age-group and Masters swimming programs.
They also are a community steeped in giving, with numerous
foundations, which also fits well with our own foundation program. The
Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County developed a
diverse committee that included local Masters swimmers, the Sarasota
YMCA, Ringling College, University of South Florida Sarasota -Manatee,
the city, the county and private business leaders, all coming together
to make us feel very welcome. We see important short-term and long-
term opportunities in Sarasota that we believe can best serve our
initiatives. We in turn look forward to being a terrific and valued
partner to Sarasota.

Does Regular Swimming Reduce Your Risk of Dying?

by Steven N. Blair, P.E.D. - University of South Carolina
"Physical inactivity is documented as a major public health problem,
and inactive and unfit persons are more likely to develop chronic
diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and other
ailments lose function with age and thereby lose their independence
and die prematurely. Most of the evidence on physical activity and
health is from experimental studies of aerobic exercise, typically
running and epidemiological studies of self-reported physical activity
habits or measured physical fitness. Evidence from the Aerobics Center
Longitudinal Study (ACLS) indicates that individuals who report
swimming for exercise have baseline risk factor profiles similar to
runners, and better profiles than those who are sedentary.
"Recent analyses in the ACLS have addressed mortality rates in
sedentary individuals, walkers, swimmers, and runners. More than
40,000 men in the ACLS completed an extensive medical examination,
including a self-report of their physical activity habits, and were
then followed for several years for mortality. Preliminary analyses
show that mortality rates in swimmers were less than one half those
observed in sedentary men (p&lt0.01). Future analyses will evaluate
mortality rates in walkers and runners. We conclude that men who swim
for exercise have better survival rates than their sedentary peers."
