TAM SWIMMER CONQUERS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL
Catheryne DiPrete, 46, of Novato swam the English
Channel, completing the 26-mile swim from Dover,
England to Wissant, France in 12 hours and 12
minutes. After the swim, Catheryne compared the
giant swells she encountered to, "swimming
through 10 foot walls of water. Think The Perfect
Storm," she said.

Catheryne prepared for the swim by training twice
a day with the TAM Masters at Marin Academy,
swimming in the San Francisco Bay on weekends,
and completing a 19-mile trans-Tahoe swim from
Tahoe City to South Lake Tahoe. This was
Catheryne's second attempt at the Channel. Last
year, after 12 1/2 hours and over 30 miles in
treacherous conditions, she was forced to abandon
her swim when the weather made reaching the
French shore impossible.

US MASTERS SWIMMING REGISTERS IT 50,000TH MEMBER
U.S. Masters Swimming reached a historic
milestone, registering its 50,000th member. This
marks the first time U.S. Masters Swimming has
ever registered more than 50,000 members in a
given year. U.S. Masters Swimming's mission is to
promote adult health, fitness, wellness and
competition through aquatics.

"Our 2009 growth, up more than 11% from 2008, has
been spectacular given the current financial
climate. It speaks to the importance that people
are placing on their personal health and
well-being," says U.S. Masters Swimming President
Rob Copeland. "Our growth can be attributed to
our many volunteers, who serve as passionate
ambassadors for our mission; to Masters coaches,
who give so unselfishly to enhance the member
experience; and to our professional staff that is
executing our strategic action plan."

WHY MESSING UP IS GOOD FOR YOU
Theresa Borchard writes "Why messing up is good
for you" in the World of Psychology blog. "I
joined a Masters swimming program knowing full
well that I would be placed anywhere from the
slow lane to the medium laneŠ that is, at least
two lanes from the fast lane. . .

and I will learn Š that swimming isn't about
winning a blue or red ribbon. It's about having
fun and learning. Even if you belly flop when you
dive and your butterfly looks more like a
caterpillar.
