THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS
Richard Harley dies at
New York Open Water Meet

Richard Harley,San Rafael salesman and high school sports announcer
died Saturday while swimming across the East River from Manhattan to
Brooklyn to raise money for a girls' school in Kenya where one of his
sons teaches, his family said.
Richard Harley, 59, apparently suffered a heart attack about three
minutes into the Brooklyn Bridge Race, which started at 9:45 a.m.,
said his wife, Evelyn Harley. Richard was an unattached swimmer who
lived in Marin.. (from SFGate.com)

JACK BERTRAM
WALNUT CREEK
On September 15th during the 10:30 practice, WCM member Jack Bertram,
69, had an apparent heart attack while in the water swimming. He was
transported to John Muir, but unfortunately did not pull through.

Jack came to WCM by way of the Intensive Training Camp last March.
He and wife Sylvia live in Sonoma, where Jack pretty much swam by
himself without any coaching. At the WCM Camp, Jack really got to
know the Creek coaching staff and decided he would like to come down
to Walnut Creek and get coached and swim with some really great
teammates. He was pointing towards the World Championships in Sweden
next July. Jack was retired Navy who enjoyed making "Medal Winning"
wine, some of which he graciously donated to the team for auction or
raffle. (Kerry O'Brien)
