PACIFIC MASTERS MISSION STATEMENT

As adopted by the Pacific Masters Committee the Mission of Pacific Masters is:

Pacific Masters Swimming welcomes anyone who would like to gain and maintain fitness through swimming and encourages programs to foster this mission.

Pacific Masters Championships
The 2010 Pacific Masters Short Course yards championships will be held at the Dolores Bengston Aquatic Center, Pleasanton, California. Led by Walnut Creek Masters (167 Swimmers), University of San Francisco (149) and Davis Aquatic Masters (111), 911 swimmers will make this the largest Pacific Masters short course yards championships.

Come cheer your club's swimmers. Early this week psych sheets will be available on the Walnut Creek web site

CAROL CLEVELAND, WIFE OF GEORGE CLEVELAND, PASSES.
We're sorry to report the passing of Carol Cleveland, spouse for 62 years of long-time Pacific official George Cleveland. Our condolences to George and their family. George has worked at Master's meets for over 20 years and has spent many many hours working on the deck as a referee or starter.
A celebration of Carol's life will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at the Campbell United Methodist Church, 1675 Winchester Blvd., Campbell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carol Cleveland Memorial Fund at the church.

For anyone who might want to send a card, George's address is 4675 Doyle Road, San Jose CA 95129.

US Masters Swimming Short Course Yards Championship Deadline 15 April
The on-line Deadline for the US Masters Swimming Short Course is April 15th. Information about the championships being held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center is at

SWIMFEST
Come share the deck with some of the world’s top Masters swim coaches. Join us for a weekend of clinics and instruction in a friendly, non-competitive environment. Whether you are looking to learn the basics, hone your skills or become a more efficient coach, SwimFest ‘10 is for registered Masters swimmers and coaches of all levels and abilities.Ten of the most respected Masters coaches came to one location to educate, mentor and share best practices with other Masters coaches. There were 35 coaches who attended last year's SwimFest.

Friday, June 4 is a coaches-only seminar. Saturday, June 5 will be geared towards pool swimming and Sunday, June 6 will focus on open water swimming. We suggest you register early; attendance is limited. The three-day clinic is FREE for Coaches. For swimmers, the cost is $130/day or $200 for both Saturday and Sunday.

Pacific Masters will sponsor coaches to go to SwimFest and PacMasters will pick up the a coaches plane fare to San Diego and 1/2 of the hotel room (if two coaches buddy up at the hotel, your hotel is covered). PACIFIC MASTERS SWIMMERS MAKE TOP TWELVE MASTERS SWIMMERS OF 2009
Laura Val and Richard Burns of Tamalpias Aquatic Masters were listed in Swimming Worlds Top Twelve Masters Swimmers of 2009. Swimming World Magazine honors the best of the best in Masters swimming. Laura has been on the list for the past five years and both Laura and Rich made the last last year.

Also on the list was Gail Roper, who swims for Arizona now, but has swum for many teams in Pacific and coached for USF.

KEIKO PRICE OF WALNUT CREEK MASTERS
Also in Swimming World magazine was an article about Keiko Price of Walnut Creek Masters. Keiko is currently the assistant academic director for student-athletes at Stanford University. She swam for UCLA and qualified and competed at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Trials.

MASTERS SWIMMER ELECTED PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY
Ralph Brindis, MD, was elected president of the American College of Cardiology at the 59th Annual Scientific Meeting of the ACC held in Atlanta. Dr Brindis is a practicing physician at the Kaiser Permanente Medical group.

Ralph has been swimming on the University of San Francisco Masters Swim team for over 20 years and swims the weekday morning workout when he is not traveling.

OPEN WATER 201
For open water swimmers put on your calendar Sunday, May 2, Open Water 201, Lake Del Valle, Livermore, that is sponsored by Pacific Masters Swimming.

This is an open water clinic for experienced open water swimmers. Must have completed at least 2 OW swims of 1/2 mile each and be able to swim a mile in 30 minutes or less. Key speaker is Lisa Hazen, an international and local open water champion. Limited to 50 swimmers. Dryland talk by Lisa and a panel of OW experts, in water drills, 1/2 mile swim. In water drills will focus on sighting, drafting, passing, buoy turns. There will be a short 200 yard swim to practice what you have learned before the 1/2 mile swim.

CATFISH SWIM
The first open water event of the season will be the Catfish Crawl East Bay to be held at Shadow Cliffs in Pleasanton. This will be the first meet sanctioned Catfish Crawl and we look forward to working with USA Productions.
