LAURA VAL, BOB STRAND SWIM MAGAZINE'S SWIMMERS OF THE YEAR
Laura Val, Pacific Master's Woman Swimmer of the Year, was the named 
Swim Magazine's 2001 Swimmer of the Year. Reportedly, Laura was the 
first swimmer of the year chosen unanimously.

Laura was chosen for setting "21 world records and 26 national 
records. No. 1 rankings in 30 of a possible 53 events (all three pool 
courses)."

Bob Strand, of The Olympic Club, was also named Swimmers of the year 
for setting "six world records, 10 national records and 12 No. 1 
rankings." Bob is Pacific Master's 2001 Male Swimmer of the Year.

San Mateo Master Marlins are sponsoring the The Parkside Aquatic Park 
One Mile Swim. Race Day registration is available - $30 and includes 
a t-shirt (first come first serve limited supply) post-race beverages 
and snacks; picnic and bbq grills are available. Estimated water 
temperature is 65 degrees.

Redwood Coast Masters is sponsoring the Spring Lake One Mile Open 
Water Swim on Saturday, May 18, 2002. Pre-entry deadline (May 3rd) 
registration is $20.00. late registration and race day registration 
is $25.00. Expected water temperature is 68-70 degrees.

Davis Aquatic Masters is sponsoring the Lake Berryessa Annual One and 
Two Mile Swims on Saturday June 1st. Pre-registration deadline is May 
15th.  Carpooling is strongly suggested. Expected Water temperature

COACH OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS DUE
Nominations for the 2002 Pacific Masters Coach of the Year are due 
May 22, 2002.  The Coach of the Year is selected on the basis of 
inspirational and instructional qualities; club and individual 
accomplishments including championships and world records; and 
non-competitive club and individual  accomplishments including club 
size and growth, club participations. volunteering, and events run by 
the club; and the coach's service to Pac Masters, USMS and other 
Masters organizations, participation in clinics, and published works.

or delivered to the Pacific Masters Swimming May meeting in Danville. 
The Award will be presented at the Pac Masters Long Course 
Championships.

USMS CONVENTION
Pacific Masters is able to select 20 delegates to attend the USMS 
Convention in Dallas, TX, September 12-14. If you would like to be a 
delegate, please contact either Doug Huestis, Pacific Master's

For coaches this is an excellent way to meet coaches from other parts 
of the United States.

LONG DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
At the National Convention, the Long Distance Committee will be 
choosing the sites for the 2004 long distance Championships. This 
year the west can bid on the 1-3 mile open water championship. If you 
club is eligible and would like to hold the 2004 1-3 mile national 
championship, please contact Jim Wheeler, Pacific's Long Distance 
chair and member of the USMS Long Distance Committee.

RULES YEAR
This year's USMS convention will focus on the Rules part of the Rule 
Book (articles 1 and 3). If you have any suggestions about changes 
for the Rule book, please contact Alan Levinson, the Legislation and

This year the Championship Committee will be considering the order of 
events for the National Championships. If you would like to see 
changes to the order of events please contact Barry Fasbender, the

APRIL MINUTES
The minutes of the April Pacific Masters Monthly meeting have been 
posted to the web site. The next meeting of the committee is May 22.

OFFICIALS CLINICS
There will be an officials clinic in Yuba City on the 13th of May 
which will start at 7:30. The clinic will be at the Yuba City Racquet

Save the 26th of May for a Truckee Stroke and Turn Clinic!! An 
Officials Clinic on Saturday, May  26th from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 
Truckee High School.

IVY BROWNE (1915-2002)
Ivy Browne of the Sierra Nevada Masters passed away.  Last year Ivy 
had five top times in her age group. She also holds the Pacific 50 
yard free record in the 85-89 age group. She was a frequent 
participant at the Senior Games. Last month, she participated in the 
recent FINA World Masters Championships. Wednesday, she died in her 
sleep.

PACIFIC MASTERS OFFICE CLOSED MAY 13-17
The Pacific Masters Swimming Office will be closed the week of May 
13-17 and will re-open May 20. our Registrar will be attending her 
28th consecutive short course nationals. Good luck Nancy.
