Update on Pacific Masters Swimming sent to members and friends. Mon Jun 8 00:25:09 EDT 2009

PACIFIC MASTERS MISSION STATEMENT:
As adopted by the Pacific Masters Committee the Mission of Pacific Masters is:

Pacific Masters Swimming welcomes anyone who would like to gain and
maintain fitness through swimming and encourages programs to foster
this mission.

This was in todays SJ Mercury News:

"Rajeev Motwani, beloved in high tech world - including Google - dead at 47
By Pete Carey

Rajeev Motwani, 47, the Stanford University computer science
professor who mentored Google's co-founders when they were graduate
students, has died from a freak accident at his Atherton home.
Motwani apparently drowned Friday morning in a backyard swimming pool
at the home he purchased three years ago. Friends said he did not
know how to swim, but was planning to take lessons. While little
official information was available, friends speculated that Motwani
may have slipped and fallen in the pool. Paramedics were called when
his body was found, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:28
p.m., according to the San Mateo County coroners office."

As swimmers, we dont think twice about getting in the pool. We are
confident in the water, we swim thousands of yards a month with
confidence. It is part of us, it is who we are.

Yet there are thousands of people in our area who do not swim either
because they are scare of the water or they just never learned to
swim as a child.

There are many community college that have swimming programs for the
beginning swimmer
Los Medanos
City College of San Francisco
De Anza
Foothill
Indian Valley
Contra Costa
Chabot College
Fresno City College
Napa Valley
Sierra College
are just of few of the community colleges that have classes in swimming.

The are many adults that have a fear of the water and that fear has
to be addressed before one will feel comfortable in the water. Melon
Dash's Miracle Swimming Institute has been part of Pacific Masters
for many years. More information on that program is at
http://www.conquerfear.com/

She will also be having a conference on her program of working with
adults who want to overcome their fear of the water and learn basic
skills. That conference will be in in October in Sarasota.
http://www.conquerfear.com/v/vspfiles/training/conference.shtml
We all have friends and acquaintances who dont know how to swim, lets
try to get our friends to learn to be comfortable in the water, so
that if they find themselves in the water, they can swim the the
other side.

FINA AND THE SUITS
You may have read the USA Swimming made a rules ruling on swim suits.

interpretations have not changed and will
remain in place until further notice. Suits that were legal two
months ago are still legal. A full interpretation is on:

TRANS TAHOE RELAY ENTRIES CLOSED
From Paul Carter, aquatics director, Olympic Club "The 2009 Trans
Tahoe Relay entries are now closed and there is a 25 team waiting
list. The event filled faster then usual due to this years online
registration. The Coast Guard and Nevada State Parks implemented a
maximum team entry of 100 after close to 150 teams participated last
year.

Olympic Club Officials and the new Race Director are exploring ways
to accommodate more teams for next years race. They realize that
many teams that have participated over the years may not be able to
this year, but hope to rectify this situation for the future without
jeopardizing the event. They thank you for understanding and
appreciate your support."

KEN SHILLING ON THE MEND
(From Stanford) At Stanfords June 1, Noon workout Ken Shilling (1:20
lane) experienced a heart attack and was taken to Stanford Hospital.
Obviously the situation was startling and quite scary for everyone.
The wonderful news is that Ken is doing well. Expert diagnosis and
care at Stanford Hospital led to a procedure that placed 5 stents
around his heart to open several blockages due to Advanced Coronary
Artery Disease.

Later in the week Ken wrote:
I had a "Pulmonary Function" test in the morning and I far exceeded
their expectations. The Surgeon stated that it was the best function
test that he had ever seen. Then we met again with the Dr. (surgeon).
He was very positive and confident and stated that he could "treat"
me with the current two options that he has in mind. What he would
like to do (I don't know what it's called) is go through my lower
left rib cage, put a camera in there, do a few lymph node biopsies
and then remove the melanoma. he feels that to get a good "margin" he
needs to remove a small portion of the left upper lung lobe. He feels
that this will have little impact on my breathing as the portion
being taken is so small. Alot will depend on how close/attached the
mass is to my Pulmonary Artery. If he is unable to proceed then he
will stop and wait till I heal (In around 6 weeks I think. Then he
would plan to shrink the mass (interferon, chemo or radiation) and
then remove I think a portion of my Pulmonary Artery. Again, he
stated he was very confident in his ability to do this as he has done
many similar surgeries. The EKG came out good.
My Pre-Op is scheduled at 9:40am on Thursday, June 11th and the
operation is scheduled to begin at 11:40am. It is anticipated that
the surgery will take 3 hours (give and take) and the recovery around
2 hours, so a total (with pre-op) of 7 hours.
Would love to hear from you as your prayers and support are very meaningful.

OPEN WATER 101- Moved to Lake Del Valle
Want to learn about open water swimming, but not sure how to start?
Concerned about cold water, crowded starts, open water culture,
Pacific Masters is sponsoring Open Water 101 a clinic for new and
developing open water swimmers. It will cover Breathing and sighting,
coping with panic, pack swimming, water entry and exit and mental
Preparation.

There will be dry land talks by Suzanne Heim-Bowen, Suzie Dods Trevor
Gillis and Lisa Hazen as well as other local, national and
international open water swimmers. The location has been moved to
Lake Del Valle. There is a limit of 50 swimmers so register early:
http://www.pacificmasters.org/comp/09pmsow101.pdf
Tell your triathlete friends they can take the course, but you must
be a member of US Masters Swimming to attend the class.

BIDDING FOR NATIONAL POOL CHAMPIONSHIPS
You can create an exciting opportunity for your club by bidding to
host either the 2011 United States Masters Swimming National Short or
Long Course Championships. The USMS Championship Committee to
strongly encourage you to work with facilities within your LMSC to
consider bidding for either of these showcase events. All entries are
now processed by USMS, which takes away much tedious work from the
host. The short course meet (25 yards or meters) typically takes
place mid-May, however, it may be held anytime between April 15th and
May 31st in accordance with USMS rules. The long course meet
typically takes place mid-August although its allowable range is
August 1 - September 15th.

BIDDING FOR NATIONAL OPEN WATER CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Long Distance Open Water Committee is soliciting bids for postal
events for 2011 and the Open Water events for 2011. The Postal events
are the One Hour Postal, the 3,000-6,000 yard postal and the 5,000
and 10,000 M postal Clubs are encourage to bid for those events.

For the open water events, in 2011 it is the West region's turn to
host and organize the one mile Open water swim, the 1 Mile cable and
the 3-6 Mile swim. The national championships would be a great way to
get swimmers from all over the US to come to your swim.

Next year Lake Del Valle wil be the venue of the 1-3 Mile national
championship. This year Millerton Lake was the scene of the one mile
national championship.

US MASTERS SWIMMING LONG COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS REGISTRATION OPENS
The complete meet information, paper entry form (PDF) and online
entry system are now available for the 2009 USMS Long Course National
Championships to be held in Indianapolis August 6-10. The Long Course
Championships will feature a relay day on Saturday, August 8, where
all the long course relays will be contested.
