COACH MIDNIGHT
I was working in the 'lab' late one night..............
Some findings from the recent 8th International Symposium of
Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming -- held in Jyvasklya, Finland.
I'll just throw out some findings and let you all 'chew' on them:
1) In a talk on "Training adaptations for optimal performance in
swimming" by David Costill (Ball State University) he pointed out
that "...training volume is not related to performance and showed
evidence that in periods of high-volume training, muscle power was
actually less than during periods of no training."
2) In a talk by Jean-Claude Chatard (St Etienne, France) he
indicated that ".....in addition to advocating year-round
high-intensity workouts, he suggested that medley swimming and weight
training should be avoided during the taper period."
3) Andrew Lyttle (Univ. of Western Australia, Australia) performed
some studies to determine the optimal distance to be under the water
during the pushoff and glide phases of racing. "Conclusion: it may be
beneficial for swimmers to perform their glides at a depth of
approximately 0.4 Meter to gain maximum benefit from reduction of
resistance." SO..................how many of you will now stop
pushing off right at the surface (where -- BTW -- one encounters
'Maximal Frontal Resistance').

OFF THE WALL
MORE MEMORY HELPS
One of the computers I use was running very very slow. It seemed to
take a long time to boot and it took a long time to switch between
programs. I was running Windows ME with minimum memory for that
operating system. Memory has been fairly inexpensive, so I purchased
256MB and put it in the PC raising the memory from 64MB to 320MB.
Performance improved. It improved a lot.
Installing memory is usually a fairly simple operation - even for a
klutz like me. Be sure you start disconnect the power and take your
time. It took me about 30 minutes to install the memory - 20 minutes
to take apart the computer (note to HP: it is really difficult to
figure how to take apart the model 6736). When you take out the
cards, note which slot the card was taken from and replace the card
in THAT slot. Memory can only go in the slot one way. Be sure the
card is seated deep in the slots. It took a little while to install
the memory, but now the computer purrs.
MAKEOVER MONDAY
Amanda Moore, Pacific Masters, and Fog City Swimmer (and my daughter)
will be featured in "Evening Magazine's" Makeover Monday segment
tomorrow February 18th. KPIX Channel 5 at 7:00 pm. The segment was
filmed a couple of weeks ago. Amanda got a new hair do, a change in
make up and a new outfit. I will have the VCR on tomorrow evening.
